Towards practical wavefront sensing at the fundamental information limit
نویسنده
چکیده
The performance of adaptive optics systems, such as for astronomical telescopes, is often limited by the available light for wavefront sensing. The efficiency of the wavefront sensor is therefore of vital importance. We have recently used a Fisher information approach to derive a fundamental limit for the measurement of wavefront phase for adaptive optics systems at low light levels. The limit, which arises from the quantized nature of light, suggests that it may be possible for adaptive optics systems to operate at light levels close to the one photon per correction mode.

Focal Plane and non-linear Curvature Wavefront Sensing for High Contrast Coronagraphic Adaptive Optics Imaging
Wavefronts can be accurately estimated directly from either focal plane images or defocused pupil plane images, in schemes similar to phase diversity. These wavefront sensing techniques offers fundamental advantages over more traditional techniques for high contrast Adaptive Optics. When combined with a high performance coronagraph, these techniques enable efficient detection of exoplanets. 1. ...
متن کاملNew methods and techniques for sensing the wave aberrations of human eyes.
During the past decade, there has been a remarkable expansion of the application of wavefront-related technologies to the human eye. The ability to measure the wavefront aberrations (WA) of an individual eye has greatly improved our understanding on the optical properties of the human eye. The development of wavefront sensors has further generated an intensive effort to revise methods to correc...
متن کاملLimits of Adaptive Optics for high contrast imaging
The effects of photon noise, aliasing, wavefront chromaticity and scintillation on the point spread function (PSF) contrast achievable with ground based adaptive optics (AO) are evaluated for different wavefront sensing schemes. I show that a wavefront sensor (WFS) based upon the Zernike phase contrast technique offers the best sensitivity to photon noise at all spatial frequencies, while the S...
متن کاملComparison of Phase Diversity and Curvature Wavefront Sensing
We compare phase diversity and curvature wavefront sensing. Besides having completely different reconstruction algorithms, the two methods measure data in different domains: phase diversity very near to the focal plane, and curvature wavefront sensing far from the focal plane in quasi-pupil planes, which enable real-time computation of the wavefront using analog techniques. By using information...
متن کاملFast Phase Diversity Wavefront Sensing for Mirror Control
We show with simulation experiments that closed-loop phase-diversity can be used without numerical guard-bands for wavefront sensing of low-order wavefronts from extended objects using broad-band filters. This may allow realtime correction at high bandwidth for certain applications. We also present a proper maximum likelihood treatment of Shack–Hartman data, which includes an imaging model to e...
